Moorcroft Pottery Large Pomegranate Vase, Dated 1919 – Lot 484
Estimate: £500–£600
A truly exceptional piece of early British studio pottery: a large Moorcroft Pomegranate vase, standing an impressive 39cm in height, stamped and signed to the base and dated 1919. This places it firmly in the golden age of William Moorcroft’s output — the period immediately following the First World War, when Moorcroft had recently established his own pottery at Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, and was producing some of the most celebrated art pottery in Britain.
The Pomegranate pattern is one of the most iconic and enduring designs in the Moorcroft canon. Introduced in the early 20th century, it features richly coloured pomegranate fruits, foliage and berries rendered in Moorcroft’s distinctive slip-trailed tubelined technique, set against a deep, lustrous ground. The design was enormously popular in its day and remains one of the most sought-after patterns among collectors worldwide. A vase of this scale — at 39cm, a genuinely large example — decorated in the Pomegranate pattern and dating from 1919 represents a significant and rare opportunity.
The piece is stamped and signed to the base, confirming its authenticity and early date of production. William Moorcroft’s personal signature on pieces of this era is a mark of quality and artistic ownership that collectors prize highly.
Condition note: Two chips and a firing crack to the base are noted. These are consistent with the age of the piece and are confined to the base, not affecting the visual impact of the decorated body.
This is a landmark lot in the sale — a piece of genuine museum quality with a century of history behind it. Whether you are a dedicated Moorcroft collector or a lover of British art pottery, this vase is not to be missed.
